One hour wait for a party of 4 at 3:15 pm on a Saturday afternoon at Zhong Xiao Fuxing (忠孝復興)Din Tai Fung(鼎泰豐), the xiaolongbao (小籠包)place.

It takes four people to make a xiaolongbao: one person makes wrapper, one person takes the wrapper, fills it with chopped vegetable and places it on a scale to check its weight, one person picks up the vegetable-filled wrapper, adds shrimp or crab meat to it and then places it on the wooden work table. The last person fold the wrapper up and makes sure the end product has 18 folds.

Well, folks, that’s the way it is.

Along the way from the main station of Taiwan’s airport metro line to Taipei railroad station are several small shops selling souvenirs and various house goods. One of them was having a liquidation sale and everything could be had at 50% of the original price.

How much would you want or willing to pay for one of these stuffed toys? Each one of them was at most 3″ long and slightly bigger than 2″ OD.

$2? $3?
How about $18 a piece before discount? To be precise, it was $545 new Taiwan dollar. $1 USD = $31 NTD or 新臺幣。

No wonder it was going out of business. I won’t buy any of them.

Of course, they didn’t have me in mind when they opened the store.

About two months ago I saw a commercial right in front of my eyes while I was washing my hands in a bathroom. The bathroom was located at a department store called Viewshow in Xinyi District of Taipei, Taiwan.

I said back then that one of those days you might be able to watch an ad for a restaurant while you are taking care of your business.

Lo and behold, my causal prediction became realty a week ago when we went back to Viewshow for dinner.

There it was: right there in front of me.

Thank heaven, it wasn’t a commercial for food at least.

Make your own predictions if you dare. I am not going to because I might be right again.

I’ll keep you posted.

Cheese,nuts,dried berries,salmon

叫的東西也沒有出錯:一客美國早餐-two eggs over easy, ham, fruit, pastries, coffee with milk(not cream,) an Omelet with green pepper, onion, mushroom and diced ham. I also ordered a side order of vegetables。

It came to 新臺幣$1,210。Not cheap.

Everything looked good, white tablecloth, silverware and chopsticks, salt and pepper.shskers and cream for coffee, except the.ham, the omelet, coffee, and pastries all tasted awful. I am sorry but there is simply no other way to describe it.

If you stay at the Grand Hotel, by all means enjoy your stay. But, don’t order what I ordered.

SOGO Level B2

This is a new concept shop, for Taipei at least, by the world renownded chef Joel Robuchon.

The trendy dessert shop, less than 200 sq feet in size, is small compared to other eateries on the same floor of the SOGO department store at the intersection of 忠孝東路 and 復興南路 in Taipei.

We noticed the new shop right away when we came back to Taipei a couple of months ago and I couldn’t resist the temptation to try the beautiful hand-crafted, bite-size desserts.

We could only manage one piece because we just had a big meal from a restaurant near by. We quickly decided on the one we both liked, the Tarta au Citron, and asked the young girl to pack it up for us.

She carefully picked one from the case, put it in a paper box completed with a small piece of dry ice and told us not to leave it out for more than 20 minutes.

We quickly went back to our hotel which was about 10 minutes away, unpacked the box and started enjoy the dessert right away over a cup of coffee.

The rich citrus-flavored glaze looked so elegant and luscious that we almost didn’t want to eat it. Well, we couldn’t just let this $5 piece of art goes to waste either.

In the end, the dessert tasted just as wonderful as it looked. We sure will try the others, Rubis looked especially good, once we feel less guilty about eating something we shouldn’t eat for fear of 三高。

September 7, 2015

A friend of ours took us to this seemly high class restaurant for dinner. It is located on the 2nd floor of a popular building in 臺北’s 信義區, arguably the most expensive district in the city of Taipei; for that matter, the most expensive in Taiwan. Even though the restaurant has a western style name, it actually serves authentic Chinese cuisine. That’s kind of strange to me. What‘s wrong with names like 一條龍, 369,醉月樓, 大三元?I guess FiFi is trying to attract the younger crowd who has money and desire to spend it.

It was a Friday evening and several of our friend’s family members came after work to join us for dinner. There were a couple of kids too. We occupied a mid-sized party room away from the busy dining room. A couple of serves were assigned to serve us. We were comfortable and quite relaxed. The room wasn’t very big but quite adequate for the ten of us. Since we were guests, I didn’t have to worry about what to order because our host took care of it while we were chatting with other guests.

Our host ordered a lot of food but we just couldn’t finish them.

20131118_185949 20131118_190022 20131118_190457 20131118_190500 20131118_190536 20131118_190905 20131118_191014 20131118_191303 20131118_192131 20131118_192352 20131118_201346

I have to admit that the quality of my photos weren’t very good but the taste of these dishes weren’t very good either. They certainly weren’t worth the prices paid by our host.

As for me, I will not come to this restaurant any more because I can get the same or better quality food at much cheaper restaurants around 忠孝復興捷運 station。
