Should I get a D90 instead?

Buying a New Camera or Two

The Canon Power Shot camera we had for the last three years is getting slow and not reliable. I found it unable to shot the pictures I wanted at the time I wanted to do it Saturday night in Georgetown.

The camera’s shutter was sluggish and took too long to shoot a picture. Since the battery was freshly charged, I wasn’t sure what the problem was. I need to buy a new camera, probably tow for the upcoming trips to Shanghai and Taiwan.

I am thinking about 2 cameras: a point and shoot camera – Fuji FinePix F200EXR and possibly a Nikon D5000 Digital SLR Camera based largely on CNet recommendations.

I like F200EXR because it 12.1 megapixels resolution with a 5x optical zoom. It is compact with 3.0-inch high-resolution LCD. It also offers face detection technology and the new EXR technology recognizes subjects and scene which enables the camera to determine the optima shooting mode. Its HD mode allows me to capture HD pictures. Fuji F200 EXR looks like a great camera and is very easy to use. Bao can have this camera.

I like to have a SLR camera so that we don’t have to fight over the Fuji F200EXR. It also looks cool with a SLR camera with zoom lens in your hand. The problem was that the more I looked at these cameras, the more I liked the more expensive ones such as the Nikon D90. But D90 is more than I wanted top spend so that I may settle on the D5000.

Based on the web sites I saw, Nikon 5000 is also a great camera:

  • 12.3-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor
  • Tilt and swivel color 2.7-inch LCD monitor with one-button Live View
  • 5x optic zoom
  • Can record 720p HD movie clips with sound
  • Built-in flash
  • 4 frames per second  with little shooting lag

I am interested in the package with an 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses. While I am at it, I also need a spare battery and a storage card. Hmm, I need to talk to bao about buying this one.

Maybe I can get the D90 instead.
