Kia (起亞自動車) just rolled out its 1,000,000th car from their factor in George. My first thought after reading this story is ” where is 裕隆 ?”

I saw the first Kia dealership about 10 years ago. I couldn’t help but wondered how it planed to compete with the big three; not to mention the rising popularity of Toyota and Honda?

Before long, Kia rolled out their famous 10-year, 100,000-mile bumper to bumper warranty. I said to myself that Korea was playing it for real. But the real story was how Korea the nation was behind the initiative and how Korea the nation was determined to make it a success.

Fast forward 10 years, we now see Kia cars flourishing all over the U.S. Korea utilized Kia’s existing supply chain and the dealership network to add another name to its portfolio:Hyundai (現代) so that they can more effectively compete in multiple classes.

In the mean time, I am still waiting for 裕隆 to make a move. But where are you, 裕隆?

Taiwan used to be Number One among the the so-called Four Asian Dragons (亞洲四小龍) in the 80’s and into the 90’s of the last century. unfortunately, economic development, among other things, came to a screeching halt not long after Taiwan adapted Democracy.

I submit to you that Democracy was one the major culprits of many ills plaguing Taiwan these days. Yes, Taiwanese can vote the one they like to be the president for the next four years. So what! Look at 马英九 who got elected with 51.60% of the vote on his second term。But where did he lead Taiwan to with his 20% or so favorite rating in the poll?

Will 马英九 ever do something to 裕隆 like Korea’s past presidents did to Kia and Hyundai?

I think not. 马英九 has enough trouble as is with his own party;not to mention all the headaches he has with 民进党 and with his wife in his own house.
