I am not sure why this small and cozy burger joint calls itself sheep+pony but you can definitely enjoy a juicy and tender burger if a seat is available at lunch or dinner time.

Sheep +Pony had exactly one chef and one waitress. It’s pretty dark inside and the interior was showing signs of aging though.

Once you placed your order, you needed to wait patiently for your burger because each order was prepared separately from the scratch and it took 10 to 15 minutes to cook the 2″ thick burger to perfection.

The boiler is at the bottom of the range.

Chips weren’t that great and they didn’t have draft beer either. We had to settle for a bottle of corona instead. The small kitchen was on the other side of the 5-seat counter. Three or four more tables were on the outside of the kitchen in an enclosed area on the sidewalk.

The other half of the dining room is on the other side of the kitchen.

Very simple menu: burgers and deep fried drumsticks.

We ordered a slider, 2 pieces of drumsticks and a bottle of corona. The burger is topped with sauteed onion and seasoned with salt and pepper. The buns are grilled but chips weren’t very good.

The slightly breaded drumsticks were juicy in the inside and crispy on the outside. However, I wouldn’t say they were extraordinary.

晶華酒店在台北算是不錯的酒店。它位於台北市中山區離臺北車站不遠。晶華酒店的栢麗廳《Brasserie》在樓下,是酒店的吃到飽餐廳。我們去年來過一次,吃的是下午茶。人多,菜色不少,新鮮,好吃,還不錯。

新鮮的刺身和壽司就是從這幾條魚身上切下來的。

海鮮臺。

這一次朋友生日,我們請他們吃晚上的 buffet。本來我們要去 Grand Hyatt (君悅),可是禮拜五訂不到位子,只好來晶華了。

晶華的吃到飽還算是有水準的餐廳。服務員很年輕,好像清一色年輕女孩子。個個都很客氣,臉上堆滿了笑容。輕聲輕氣的。我後來給服務我們這一桌的三個服務員還不錯的評語,希望對她們有一點幫助。

一個都沒吃。

一盤一盤的熱菜。

湯:onion soup,羅宋湯,海鮮湯,等等。

啤酒,咖啡台。

晶華柏麗廳蠻大的。最顯眼的就是海鮮台。好幾種螃蟹,小蝦,大蝦,五六種魚,火燒壽司,手卷,刺身,可惜我看的比吃的多。其他的種類有沙拉,水果,甜點,中式熱食,西式熱食,點心,飲料,麵,湯,等等。

新鮮的大魚大肉一直提供給客人吃到九點半,一點都沒有手軟。啤酒,咖啡免費喝,可惜沒有免費的白酒或紅酒。美中不足啊。

那幾隻大魚已經吃的差不多了。剩下的魚片就是明天中午的刺身和壽司了。

種類實在是不少。每種吃一口的沒辦法。

現做的麵。

烤的大蝦和oysters。

晶華柏麗廳禮拜五晚上的生意相當不錯。幾個大廳都坐滿了。我們預訂六點,一直到九點半才離開。

我其實不應該吃這麽多甜點的。一頓飯,把十天的甜點都吃完了。看來只有在其他幾餐少吃一點了。擺設很大方,食物的質量很高,非常新鮮。味道也都不錯。

下次再來,不過這個下次恐怕是幾年以後了。

我們去植物園踏青,知道南機場夜市不是太遠,決定去看看。反正沒去過,肚子也餓了,去瞧瞧,找點好吃的。

夜市不大,不長的一條街到底,加上兩三條巷子,如此而已。

夜市裏有賣吃的,有賣東西的,人還不少。在夜市入口兩邊的攤子都排了長龍。好多人排了十分鐘才有飯吃。既然有這麽好的生意那東西一定不錯。看了又看,右邊的隊伍比較長。就它吧。

南機場夜市大門口。人好的。禮拜二的晚上。生意還不錯。

生意最好的就是左邊這一家。我們就是在這家吃的。Yikes,what a mistake。

麪疙瘩,這個名詞已經好幾年沒聽過了。以前家裏窮,媽媽還做麪疙瘩給我們吃。那時候,麪粉,米和油是空軍配下來的。按家裏的人數分配。麪疙瘩簡單,容易做。放些青菜,加些鹽和幾片豬肉就是一餐飯了。

不知道那個大缸裏面烤的是什麽。

麪疙瘩。

臺灣的生煎包比大陸的好吃。用發過的麵做的。比較不油,皮厚,軟,素的生煎包還蠻好吃的。

這就是南機場夜市最忙的那一家賣的飯菜:雞肉一盤,豬肉一盤,澆了滷汁的白飯一碗,抓了一把金針花放在一碗湯裏就是金針湯。

如果你喜歡吃冷的,帶了肥肉和冷雞皮的白斬雞胸肉。如果你喜歡冷的,帶了黏嘰嘰肥肉的冷豬肉。如果你喜歡溫溫的白飯澆上一瓢滷汁。如果你喜歡冷的金針游在熱湯裏的金針湯。那這就是你的餐館。除此之外,油嘰嘰的桌面。用了幾百次的抹布,矮矮的板凳,髒髒的地,擠的要死的露天餐館。這就是你的餐館。

還有,便宜的要死。

我吃了一口就跟老婆說我不吃了。勉強的喝了幾口湯。急急忙忙的就離開了。

從來沒吃過這麽難吃的東西。

往前走幾步路是這家賣滷肉飯和筒仔米糕的小攤位。滷肉飯一般。油多,肥肉也不少。筒仔米糕倒是非常好吃。一級棒。蒸的透。味道香。配料好。非常道地。跟我四十幾年前在台南吃的筒仔米糕有拼。可惜少了一撮 cilantro。

酥炸排骨湯。也是一級棒。肉多。少骨頭。吃在嘴裏有料。味道也頂呱呱。

前面的是筒仔米糕。以前吃的是用一節竹子蒸的。現在都不用了。不銹鋼的小碗,一蒸十幾碗。生意好。後面的就是排骨酥湯。

典型的江浙點心。很吸引人。

好幾家賣水餃的。你看它生意多好。

來來水餃很有名。只賣水餃和幾樣小菜。就如此而已。下次來。兩家水餃打對臺。兩個生意都好。

不敢吃。好像是豬血和糯米蒸出來的。外面好像包子一層花生米粉。

南機場夜市的尾巴。一條街五分鐘就走完了。

This small restaurant in Taipei East (台北東區) gave me a cold feeling when we went there a few weeks before.

I didn’t know whether it was the bright lights from the ceiling, the mirror on the wall, the empty dining room, the open spaces in the restaurant, the bland sandwiches or the much too sweet desserts we were served that afternoon.

The service was not inspiring and we got too many sweets.

I won’t go again.

No wonder it is called Stagiaire.

今天是禮拜六,天陰陰的。本來我們打算去鶯歌陶瓷老街逛逛,坐公車去板橋火車站時開始下大雨。氣象預報說這雨一直要下到六點多。我們決定不去鶯歌,就在板橋火車站逛逛吧。

板橋是新北市最大的行政區,人口差不多有六十幾萬人。新北市政府也設在板橋,市政府的大樓就在火車站的後面。板橋最大的購物中心,大遠百,Mega City,就在市政府的邊上。

板橋火車站非常熱鬧。這裏的交通實在是四通八達:高鐵,捷運板南線,五十路的公車站,遠程汽車站。九月份台北新北的環狀捷運又要通車。你看這裏有多熱鬧。天天在這裏進進出出的人不知道有多少。週末來這裏吃飯的,逛街的和聊天的更是數不勝數。

鐵路便當很便宜,味道不錯,偶爾吃吃也不錯。最便宜的只要$60,差不多$2美金。

好吃吧?

這個長廊可以去新北市政府和大遠百。後面那一段邊上有很多男男女女的學生在這裏練舞。

火車站底下的長廊有好多家餐館,食堂,麪包店和咖啡廳。

其實,我們來這裏已經很多次了。不過,樓下一樓的美食街是最近才開的。我們上次來是在賣江浙菜的麻膳堂吃的。麻膳堂的名字有點怪,聽起來不像是一個賣江浙菜的餐館。他們的東西不算好。馬馬虎虎而已。

麻膳堂的邊上有一家賣丼飯的餐館:開丼,看起來不錯。我們當時就決定下次來。

開丼只賣丼飯和一些小菜。菜單裏的丼飯相片實在漂亮。我們選了:

太太點的是這個。

這就是極上翼板牛排丼。邊上小碗是紅豆湯。可能是 flank steak。肉很嫰。包在 Lettuce 裏吃也很好吃。

這是我點的:

炙燒舒肥櫻桃鴨叉燒。附帶的三種沾汁是給鴨肉的。分別是紫紫蘇鹽,Balsamic vinegar 和金桔胡椒。

把肉拿開了以後就是這個樣子。

我們還點了兩個小菜:胡麻秋葵和,XO醬炒水蓮和一罐啤酒。

秋葵。Miso soup 自己去拿。還有紅茶和檸檬汁。Lettuce 是用來包肉和飯的。不夠可以再要。

丼飯很好吃,肉香,味重,很甜,有一股淡淡的烤肉的獨特焦味。米是臺灣米。我特別問了,不過沒問出是那裏生產的。我猜是越光米。每粒米的個子很大,粒粒分開,不黏嘴,不粘牙,圓圓寶滿,白白胖胖的,非常好吃。那些要我們吃糙米的人,一定沒吃過這種白米。不過,我一面吃,一面有人在耳朵邊上嘮叨:多吃糙米。少吃白米。別忘了,好吃的一定不健康。

吃了再說吧。下次在家吃糙米好了。

澆在飯上的醬汁也都有甜味,油光光的。要是有一點半酸半甜的酸菜就更好了。梅子不是那種軟趴趴的,吃在嘴裏沒味道的那種。梅子的肉很結實,不甜,也不酸。最後我還是沒把飯吃完。叫的東西太多,別忘了,啤酒還有好幾百百個卡路里呢。

秋葵是水煮以後冷凍的,好像是芝麻醬的配料。水蓮還可以,還算嫰。雖然是用XO醬炒出來的,可是味道不重,鹽放的也不多。

火車站地下街還有很多好吃的東西。餐館,食攤子差不多有五十幾家。

廣東點心

把這麽多好吃的東西擺在你前面真是要命。你難道不知道我只有一個肚子,二高,肚子還不怎麽好嗎?真缺德啊!吃個胃藥吧。

如果這不能吃,那個也不能吃,這日子過的還有什麼意思呢?

韓國的炸醬麪,沒想到在這裏還看的到。這讓我想起 FAIRFAX和 Centerville VA 那幾家韓國店的炸醬麪了。

臺灣小吃。

豆花好吃,就是太甜了。

這些是 sushi。

素食堂有七八十種素菜。

這像是粽子。

這是廣告。九份老街是可以一去再去的地方。

麻膳堂的廣告。

我們去過吃到飽。不是太好的那種。以後不會去。

怎麽樣?流口水了沒有?

哦,二樓還有好多店子呢。

中午我們兩個在林口三井樓下分了一個小黃瓜雞蛋沙拉三明治,外加一個小青李子。飯後,我們去林口酒廠參觀。它就在長庚醫院附近,離醫院走路只要十分鐘左右。酒廠不大,一個鍾頭就看完了。三點多出來肚子就餓了。

中午沒吃什麼,明顯的我們是熬不到下午六點才吃晚飯了。太太找了一家陝西小館,離長庚醫院不遠,我們決定去試試看。

餐館佈置簡單,八九張桌子,老闆娘還在後面包鍋貼。她要我們自己在櫃檯拿菜單和筆,吩咐我們坐在靠牆的一個小桌。等我們決定要吃什麼,再去櫃檯買單。

它們有泡饃,麪條,鍋貼,湯包,三樣炒青菜和七八種小菜。

我們點了一籠高湯蒸餃,一碗半筋半肉紅燒牛肉麪,一盤枸杞子絲瓜,三個小菜:乾絲,苦瓜和泡菜。

小菜先上,都很可口,新鮮。清脆的苦瓜配著豆瓣醬一起吃,這還是第一次。

高湯餃子一籠八個,汁鮮,味佳,皮薄,湯多。相當不錯。

小碗牛肉麪對我們來說剛剛好。半筋半肉煮的蠻爛的,稍稍有點嚼勁。麪條多煮了一把火,少了一點咬勁。湯濃,味正,做法正宗道地,算是比較好的紅燒牛肉面了。

蒸絲瓜火候恰恰好,薄薄的絲瓜很新鮮,很嫩,還帶了一點天生的甜味。

臺灣的絲瓜真棒。個兒不大,跟手膀子一般大小。其嫰無比,有淡淡的甜味。吃在嘴裏沒有一點雜質。大火蒸個五六分鐘就好了。配上薑絲和枸杞子,其味無窮。

其實這家陝西小館我在幾年前到林口來探索的時候就看到了。五六年過去了它還在,就表示它還是有一定的顧客。它的東西不錯,味道正宗,價錢便宜。服務嗎,自己來吧。半正式的餐館,湊活湊活吧。

店名叫鳥地方,不太高明。不過看到了,大概也忘不了了。

下次還可以再來。

Naughty Nuri’s Warung, 刁廚,紐利,Taipei March 17, 2019

A cozy little restaurant offering an eclectic menu including salad. burgers, BBQ ribs, prime steaks, grilled chickens, lamb chops, roasted beef on a stick, deep fried oysters, BBQchicken wings, Balinese fried rices, Italian pasta, sauteed spinach and broccoli with cheese. For drinks, Naughty Nuri’s has a variety of its own brand of bottled beers, including lagers, pale ale and fraise.

The owners of the restaurant came from Bali who opened the original Nuri’s in Bali in 1995 and have enjoyed huge success with its finger-licking good BBQ ribs and other authentic Balinese cuisines.

hey came to Taipei in 2018 and opened Naughty Nuri’s in Eastern District of Taipei. We found Nuri’s while browsing a Taiwanese APP called 愛食記. We were particularly attracted by the pictures of BBQ ribs uploaded by many members of the APP.

We had dinner for 2 which included:

A half order of BBQ ribs,

A Balinese pan fried noodles with chicken,

Chicken satay and garlic bread.

We also ordered a bottle of Nuri’s pale al and a bottle of Nuri’s lager.

All dishes were great and the BBQ ribs was the best even though it was a bit on the sweet side. Satay should be grilled for a few minutes more so that it could be caramelized.

Nuri’s beers were great with the ribs and we both like the fried noodles as well.

Next time we’ll try lamb chops and fried rice.

One of these days we will come back to order a full slab of ribs. Maybe an order of salad too.

Six weeks ago we came to Mega 50 next to the Mega Mall in Banqiao for mid afternoon tea for two. After we finished our meal we went to the Mega Mall to check out what kind of restaurants the biggest department store in Banqiao has. That was the time when I saw Le Ble D’or, 金色三麥。

It was very busy that Saturday evening and there was a line of people waiting to get in at about 7:30 pm. The restaurant brewed its own beers which have won multiple awards in international competitions. The American style cuisines it serves should give us a change of taste from Chinese food we eat almost everyday.

That’s when I decided to try this restaurant the next time we visit Banqiao again.

We came on a Wednesday night around 6 pm. The restaurant wasn’t busy at the time but filled up nicely around 6:30. We ordered dinner for two which included a salad with yogurt based dressing, grilled chicken breast on a stick appetizer, roasted mushrooms, deep fried chicken with fries and a bowl of Louisiana Jambalaya.

With $150 TWD extra, we could have a glass of their German style beer which usually costs $250 each.

Shrimps were very fresh. Salad was fresh and the dressing was good. We finished the whole plate in a jiffy.

Baked mushrooms with ground beef and cheese. Mushrooms were a little dry. They would be a lot better if baked in Olive oil and chopped basil.

Not brown enough though.

Wished we had more fries. They were great! Chicken was dried.

Excellent.

Looks great too.

Very smooth without the bitter after taste.

Kind like blue moon. Smooth with a hint of orange Citrus taste.

The food was quite tasty except they came out too fast which didn’t give us enough time to enjoy the meal. The deep fried chicken was too dry and the sauce for the chicken was too spicy hot.

At our request, the jambalaya was delayed so that we could have it at the end after we finished the other dishes.

Both beers were very smooth, balanced and great which was why Le Ble D’or won so many accolades in international beer competitions.

No wonder the restaurant was so busy on weekends. Business on weekdays wasn’t shabby neither.

Youdefinitely need a reservation to get in the door on weekends.

Hot Pot Depot, Linkou, New Taipei City February 28, 2019

Recently several new restaurants opened near my house in Linkou, New Taipei City in Taiwan.

Among them was the Hot Pot Depot in the housing community of Yuan Xiong Future City. It was 12 minutes away from my house on foot.

It used to be a family business selling brand name children’s products but closed its door due to competition from the much bigger Carrefour supermarket in the basement of the residential community.

By my account, there are four more personal hot pot restaurants within 1000 feet radius from HPD and they are all selling basically the same type of food. The only difference was the quality of the meat and price.

We chose Hot Pot Depot because it was the newest one.

The format goes like this:

  • Each person has his or her own side of a hot pot,
  • You select the soup base first,
  • You get a fixed amount of vegetables including some mushrooms.
  • You choose type of meat: be it vegetables, sliced pork, sliced beef, seafood or lobsters.
  • The meat and seafood are a la carte and you can order as much as you want,
  • The shachajiang sauce and sweetened tea are free but you have to help yourself,

We ordered a combo vegetables plate and a plate of sliced ribeye. There were much more food than we wanted to consume but we managed to finish the meat and most of the veggies. The quality of the sliced ribeye was excellent, probably the best sliced beef we’ve had in Linkou.

The price was reasonable but the service was a bit sloppy. The owner herself had to greet the customers at the door, showed customers to their tables and took money (cash only) from the customers when they finished their meals. She had to cleaned the tables too. We waited for at least a minute at the front counter before she came to greet us. After we finished our meals, HPD had ran out of iced creams and the workers just didn’t have time to refill the iced cream freezers.

Upon paying our bills, I asked her, a beautiful and very pleasant woman in her early 30’s, about how busy her restaurant was on a Wednesday, she said that she had a hard time to keep qualified people working for her.

Well, HPD is much larger than I thought which could be risky for a bedroom city like Linkou. It had some minor problems probably because it had only opened for three weeks or so.

However, I am certain that we will come back and enjoy that high quality sliced ribeye at a very affordable price soon.
