Take a look of the following bullets and table for fiscal year 2013 and answer this question:

Is this a sign of a strong nation?

The following came from an 8/31/2015 GAO report on American’s federal welfare and social service programs for fiscal year 2013:

  • 48.7 million Americans, or 15.5% of U.S. population, lived in poverty.
  • 82 federal programs and tax expenditures totaling $742 billion in fiscal 2013.
  • Roughly 1/3 of U.S. population received federal government assistance in 2012.
  • Some of these programs are available to illegal immigrants.
