If you don’t mind the crowd, tight space, somewhat rushed service, family style setting, self serving salad (lettuce, broccoli, tofu, tomato,  pickled bean sprouts and miso based dressing) and down to the earth ambiance, Blue Ocean in Fairfax, Virginia, is the place to get fresh and reasonablly priced sushi and authentic Japanese food.

I don't know Japanese so I don't know what they are selling.

This busy and small eatery was packed with customers when we got there early Sunday afternoon. We have reserved the party room in the back for our party of 11.

Some ordered Udon, some ordered bento boxes (4 choices: chicken, beef, salmon and sashimi), some ordered eel rice and some ordered rice with pork chops. We also ordered soft shell crabs, shrimp tempura and orange roughy misoyaki.

All dishes were delicious and properly seasoned. The miso soup was salty (no seaweed) but all other dishes were light and tasty.

You get a lot of food for the price you paid. Sushi was fresh. The rice wasn’t too sweet. The salad, even with the miso dressing, was too bland for my taste.

My terriyaki chicken was a bit over done but the sushi was great! I did get a lot of rice which I couldn’t finish. The roasted salmon which came with the bento box was better though.

All in all, this is a nice sushi restaurant you should try. All these accolades and awards can’t all be wrong. All the customers we saw who were waiting for a seat on the day of our visit can’t all be wrong either.
