Chinese restaurants come and Chinese restaurants go like a game of perpetual non-stop game of music chairs. Many couldn’t stay in business because they couldn’t stand monetary losses month in and month out. Some survived after a few months of hard work and continuous improvements on its service, appearance and every dish it serves to its customers. Some survived because they have enough funds to withstand the inevitable slow time that comes with any new restaurant. Some survived because the owner or owners have a strong desire to succeed and are able to put aside the differences and animosity among them. A few survived and even flourished because they have a unique theme or type of food which was able to attract a wide base of customers.

Dumpling Queen may belong to the latter category and it just might survive if it can keep its standard up. We shall see. I wish them well.

First of all, I have to tip my hat to the owner(s) because its neighbor is Hibachi Buffet. I called Chinese buffets black holes because they suck in customer’s money from every direction. Its event horizon can be as large as 10 to 15 miles. Any Chinese restaurant operating within the event horizon has one fate waiting for them: pay a penalty to the landlord and close it door.

Dumpling Queen’s predecessor was a Japanese restaurant which closed its door several months after Hibachi came in. Two doors down was a Chinese restaurant which also closed its door because it just could compete with Hibachi. A Korean restaurant is now operating there.

Our first experience was a bad one: one of two appetizers we ordered wasn’t available and the vegetable  and mushroom dumpling never came. The restaurant opened about 2 or 3 weeks ago and our waiter told me the one who is in charge of making dumplings didn’t show up for work. I am going to cut them some slack this time and we’ll come back some time later.

DQ charges too much for this appetizer. The other appetizer, Spicy bamboo shoots wasn't available.

This beef noodle is different from the one we are accustomed to. I would call this 蘭州牛肉麵. The broth was great but there were only a few pieces of thinly sliced beef.

This was a classic: just the way we liked it: tender and soft rice cake, good amount of pickled cabbage and balanced taste. I also like its color too.
