Chevron will eliminate 1500 jobs to help the oil company deal with low oil price. It needs To let these people go to be abe to keep the dividends at current level.

It’s the first U.S. major oil company to do so.

The headcount reduction at CVX is superficial and it affects HQ only. If low oil price persists, more cuts will come. There is no other way to do it.

Now, who will be the next U.S. major oil company to do the same?

You can flip a coin to decide because there are only two left:

1.   ExxonMobil
2.   ConocoPhillips

I believe XOM regularly let the bottom 1 to 2% employees go and XOM runs its E&P business very conservatively.

My guess is COP because it is roughly 40% of the size of CVX in terms of market value and about 30% in terms of number of employees.

We’ll see how long COP can resist the urge to hand out pink slips.
Afterall, some one has open the flood gate.

Prettysoon, a trikle will become a gusher spreading out to others.

The museum, 七寶周氏微雕館,was small and there weren’t many visitors when we were there. The miniature carving museum showcased life long work by Mr. Zhou and her daughter which was truly one of a kind in the world.

It was famous for the miniature display of  The Story of the Stone (石頭記,) commonly known as 紅樓夢。In fact, the entire book of 紅樓夢, all  one million words, were all carved on 280 pieces of stones of various shapes, materials and types. This is literally a book of stones of The Story of the Stone.

In addition, it had many other miniature displays on Chinese tea culture, Chinese calligraphy and stone carvings。

We had a great time there!

China’s fight against Japan will continue July 27, 2015

This Yahoo article is a fair assessment of the animosities between China and Japan and Korea and Japan.

“Why Asia is still fighting over World War II”

http://news.yahoo.com/why-asia-still-fighting-over-world-war-ii-161019375.html

For a detailed description of Japanese past aggression against China, from the First Sino-Japanese War (甲午戰爭) in 1894 where most war was fought in Korea, resulting in the annexation of Korea by Japan and Japan’s occupation of Taiwan to 918 Incident (九一八事變) in 1931 which led to the Japanese occupation of northeastern China (Manchuria) to the Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 to 1945, known to us as 八年抗戰, the following websites provide facts about the subject:

  1. http://www.cnd.org/mirror/nanjing/NMchron.html (English)
  2. http://www.zwbk.org/zh-tw/Lemma_Show/220595.aspx (中文)

Japan has long sought to erase this past aggression against China, Korea, Southeast Asia, Taiwan and the U.S. from Japanese’s text books and current PM, Abe, against majority of Japanese people’s opposition, is trying to change Japan’s 70-year old pacifist constitution which prohibit Japanese military from engaging in any forms of military intervention in foreign conflicts where Japanese allies are being attacked, e.g., Middle East.

Abe’s actions have incited  fresh pains and raised old wounds among citizens of China and Korea. But, I am confident that Japan is no longer a threat to China no matter how Abe changes Japan’s constitution because Japan is on the brink of collapse economically.

With a national debt of 226% of its GDP and an annual federal deficit of around 40% of its budget, Japan will soon be buried under the weight of the debt. With declining population and a generation of younger Japanese experiencing nothing but recession for their entire adult lives, Japan under Abe is digging a deeper grave for Japan if he wants to increase Japan’s military outlays. Let Japan soldiers fight a war along with American GI’s and we’ll see what ordinary Japanese think this action and changed constitution will bring them.

Japan has been shielded from military conflict for the past 70 years after the United States dropped two atomic bombs on two Japanese cities. The island country has enjoyed fast economic growth post WWII because they practically didn’t have to spend anything on military. With a fast aging (and shrinking) population, Japan should focus its national attention on economic revival. Instead, Abe is leading Japanese to a road with no hope and no future.

Japan has lost two decades after the Plaza Accord was signed in 1985 which led to the collapse of Japanese real estate and stock markets. Do Japanese citizens want another lost decade under Abe? I am afraid that they are living it and they don’t have a choice.

Every weekend, hundreds, if not thousands, of desperate parents gathered at the People‘s Square in Shanghai in the morning. They stayed there until mid afternoon. Most of them come here for one purpose and one purpose only: play match maker for his or her son or daughter with someone else’s daughter or son. They usually carry a piece of paper with hand written message about their son or daughter: age, height, education, where from, type of work and, sometimes, annual salary and whether he or she is an owner of property. The paper also states what kind of mate he or she is looking for: age, height, where from and earning capabilities.

The information is displayed for everyone to see. If you are interested in getting more information, by all means talk to his or her parent. There are many match making companies there soliciting clients and providing information of prospective targets.

What may be odd about this activities is that they usually do it without their child’s knowledge let alone of their approval.

This unusual phenomenon is the residual effect of the misguided one-child policy。

6/2013, 11/2013, 6/2014 and 11/2014.

Those were the times when Milkyway-2, or 天河-2, were named the fastest supercomputer in the world according to TOP500. And in June 2015, it is still no. 1 in the world.

image

image

Remember CRAY? They are still around. It is no. 2 at 1/2 the speed of Milkyway-2’s. Titan Is the name.

Hmmm…, where Is IBM at?
It is at no. 3 position and is called Sequoia.

China’s plan to double Tianhe-2’s speed was put on hold because the U.S. government declined Intel’s export license for more CPUs To China.

The result?

China believed that the central processing technology is so critical to China’s national security that China will develop its own to compete with industry heavy weights such as Intel, TI and and AMAT.

Talk about cause and consequence on the world level.

We will see what China can achieve in 3 to 5 years.

IAEA and Iran’s secret side agreements July 26, 2015

Kerry admitted to Congress that he didn’t know the details of these secret deals between Iran and IAEA but he signed the much hyped nuclear agreement with Iran anyway. What Kerry alluded to was that what IAEA and Iran have agreed to isn’t America’s business.

Kerry hasn’t read them. The White House doesn’t have copies. The State Department doesn’t have copies. The Congress didn’t know about this secret side deals until four days ago.

Isn’t this a bit strange?

America signed the deal with Iran but IAEA is the one who will investigate whether Iran is truthful in carrying out its end of the bargain.

What can IAEA do if Iran hide the nuclear secrets of its military sites from IAEA?

Why was Obama so anxious to get a nuclear deal with Iran anyway? He’s got a Nobel Peace Prize before he sent more American soldiers to Afghanistan already.
