Reston towncenter and many others like it all over the US revolutionalized the urban life style when they were developed decades ago. Now similar developments are everywhere and a shinning example of this mix-use residential/shopping/dining
concept is Merriefield Town Center at the intersection of Gallows and Lee Highway in Northern Virginia. Merrifield Metro Station is a few blocks away.

The Merrifield Metro Station used to be a sleepy subway station many years ago when I first came to Northern Virginia about 15 years ago. It used to have a huge parking lot and several bus stops surrounding the entrance of the subway station. Low level light industrial buildings and apartment complexes spreaded out around the blocks completed the boring landscape.

Then a ~10-story building was erected three or four years ago. It turned out to be a hotel. Streets around Home Depot opened up and a few buildings came in. Several old buildings were knocked down and a huge space was left empty near the hotel. Metro’s parking lot was closed down, a large hole was dug up and then a huge residential building was completed about a few weeks ago. Restaurants and shops came in. The old theater was leveled but a new one was built to take its place. An organic grocery store and Target opened in the neighborhood followed by a butcher shop, many restaurants, a few boutique shops and a wine store. In a span of 4 years, a new center was born and it will slowly change into another Ballston of Arlington in a decade or so.

We paid our fourth visit to here yesterday; maybe it was the fifth or sixth but who is counting, and liked what we saw: relaxed atmosphere, cafes with tables on the sidewalk, chairs everywhere, a play ground with many kids, a fountain area with color lights and water columns, and a huge open space where people can sit, talk and relax.

There are many restaurants to choose from in this area and we pick Matchbox because many people like it on Yelp.

Four guys are making pizzas at the pizza station.

And we like it too.

Here are what we ordered:

Tuna Tartare, sesame seeds, yucca chips, honey-garlic sauce, wasabi oil.

Prosciutto, fig,
arugular, roasted garlic, grogonzola and black pepper

Seared Scallops, cauliflower mash, brussels sprouts, apple bacon reduction. Great!

Trio. You have to order this. It's that good.
